How to solve it

Chaffoteaux boilers are well valued in Spain, due to their versatility and their technology focused on fuel efficiency and the reduction of polluting emissions. Chaffoteaux boilers reach Class 5, which makes them suitable for the new eco-design regulations in the domestic and commercial sectors. However, even the best boilers can one day fail, and it is convenient to be aware of how to solve the most common faults; for example, any misfire in the Chaffoteaux boiler (which is one of the most common errors). In this article we describe the causes of this type of failure and how to solve them.
Sometimes everything is solved with a good reboot
If the Chaffoteaux boiler does not start (or tries to start and fails), and then displays an error code, you may be experiencing a problem. Sometimes it’s just a routine misfire. In those cases the reset button is used, and it may be that everything is solved.
But if this is not the case and resetting does not resolve the situation, you should refer to the user manual to know what to do with each error code on the Chaffoteaux boiler. Also note that some models, for security reasons, allow only a limited number of resets. So it is better not to reboot over and over again indiscriminately.
Generic errors that are corrected by pressing the reset key can be resolved by the user himself. But in case the reset does not correct the problem, or the boiler does not reset even with the reset button, then it is time to seek a technician.

Here we will only look at, in a generic way, the ignition failure in the Chaffoteaux boiler. Some solutions can even be applied to other brands of boiler.
Solutions for Chaffoteaux boiler ignition failure
The Chaffoteaux boiler does not always have a display for error codes. Many models display error codes using numbered light combinations. So the specific error code will depend on the model, and you should be guided by the manual. Some error codes related to generic or specific ignition problems can be:
- For Urbia and Pigma models: Error 5 P3 is a generic boot problem, Error 5 01 means burner problems, and Error 3 03 means there are main board problems.
- For Pigma NOx models: Error E24 means generic starting problem, Error E11 means burner problems, and Error E05 means flue gas problems.
In each case, the indicated start-up problem must be corrected so that the boiler can start up correctly.
Fuel failure
Fuel can fail for many reasons. If the boiler detects the absence of fuel, it will not start or it will stop. The error code for fuel failure is usually 5 02 for Pigma or Urbia models, and 02 or 03 for Max Green. Check what happened and correct it: the central supply is not working, the gas tap was accidentally left closed, etc.

If you have a particular gas tank, check to see if the gas regulator is working correctly, or if the connection between the cylinder and the boiler is bent, broken or completely clogged.
If you smell the distinct smell of gas next to the boiler, that may mean there is a leak. Do not turn on anything that could produce a spark: not the light switch in the room, not a lighter, not even the boiler itself. Quickly turn off the gas tank tap and only then check to see what’s going on.
Connection fault between thermostat and control unit
If you have set a comfort temperature on the room thermostat in the house, and the boiler behaves randomly (sometimes it does start to maintain the setpoint temperature, but sometimes it does not start), the problem may be in the connection between the room thermostat and the control unit. You have to check the connection.
Faulty magnetic switch or dirty or damaged electrodes
Many models of Chaffoteaux boilers do not use electrodes, since they ignite through an automatic system that provides ignition exactly when there is a demand for hot water for heating or DHW. This system incorporates a magnetic switch actuated by water. If this fails, the boiler does not light.

If the Chaffoteaux boiler does have electrodes, even if everything else works correctly, and the fuel is ready to produce the flame, if the electrodes are dirty or damaged and do not generate a spark, it is impossible for the burner to ignite, and in the absence of flame the boiler will be blocked. It is a basic security measure.
Dirty or clogged gas outlet
If the gas outlet is dirty or clogged, the boiler may not start. A clue about this is given by the fact that if you remove the sealed lid of the boiler, it works perfectly, but with it on, it doesn’t (don’t leave the lid off, because it’s dangerous). The solution is to clean the gas outlet and/or the chimney .
All this is also closely related to the turbines, in the case of forced draft boilers. If the turbine is clogged or damaged, and the fumes cannot be sent outside, the temperature will rise too high and the boiler may not start in the next cycle. The solution is to unclog the turbine or replace it with a spare part .
